Ian glanced at Laina before he helped his disagreeable nephew into the vehicle. Her warm gray eyes met his and made him feel so relieved that she had agreed to accompany him on the trip to the wildlife refuge. He was not sure he had the patience to deal with Ramsey for the whole afternoon.
As his nephew took a seat, Ian challenged the child’s defiant blue eyes with a firmness that he hoped masked his annoyance. “Technically, she’s your cousin, Ramsey, but you’re going to call her Auntie Lainie as a sign of respect, because children in this family show respect for their elders.”
“Their elders? What are elders, Uncle Ian?” Terence bounced up and down against the restraints of his car seat. “Are they like elderberries? Gram makes pies with elderberries. They’re yummy!”
Laina’s soft laughter floated through the summer air and lifted Ian’s spirits. Apparently, she was able to find amusement in the conversation. His irritation caused by Ramsey’s words drifted away from his thoughts, and he smiled at her.
Taking her elbow, he helped Laina into the front seat. Inhaling her clean floral scent of shampoo and powder, he felt a rush of happiness wash through him. The protective feelings he had always had for her seemed to be evolving into more powerful emotions that he was unable to identify by name. Puzzled, he brushed his fingers against the cotton fabric of his pants. He could not ignore the odd tingle of energy pulsing at the tips, even after he stopped touching her.
“I hope I see an egret,” Jada said.
Tessa nodded. “I can take a picture of it on my phone if we find one.”
“I want to see a woodpecker,” Terence added.
“I brought Dad’s binoculars,” Ramsey said. “I’m going to climb an observation deck and look for a shipwreck.”
“I want to see one, too. Will you help me climb, Uncle Ian?” Terence asked.
Ian chuckled. “I plan to stay on solid ground, but I’m sure Auntie Lainie will climb up to look for old boats.”
Ramsey laughed. “The decks aren’t that high, Uncle Ian.”
Ian felt Laina’s hand touch his shoulder, and he sighed. “I don’t like heights, especially climbing unenclosed steps.”
“Don’t worry, Ian. I’d never let you fall.”
He glanced at her teasing grin before returning his eyes to the road. The warmth in her accompanying laughter sent a flood of feelings through him that was almost as strong as his fear of climbing an observation deck to see the ruins of an old ship. He forced his attention to the traffic along the road to Pea Island.
